How Much Do You Want to Pay for Health Insurance?

The AEA will hold a rally January 24, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on the steps of the State Capitol to advocate for increased health insurance funding. If you’re thinking about staying home, please reconsider!

The Kaiser Family Foundation Report (done nationally on an annual basis) shows that while our premium costs are slightly below the national norm, we are way below the national norm in what employers provide to their employees. Their latest national report states that employers pay approximately 85% of the premium cost for employee-only and 75% of the cost of employee/family plans. School employees in Arkansas have only 43% of the employee-only plan covered by the employer and 35% of the family plan covered by the employer.

Milliman, the actuary for health insurance and employee benefits, projected increases through 2015 and the amount of funding it would require for each of the next three biennia to fund school employee health insurance, assuming employer contributions were the same as those provided to state employees. State employees are currently funded at 75% for employee-only plans and 50% for family plans. Projected costs are $63 million for 2009-2011 – $16 million for the first year and $47 million for the second year. This means that in the first year, the state would pay an average of $30 per employee per month, and an additional $89 per employee per month in the second year.

Without additional state funding, your school will have to cover these increases. So please join your fellow educators at the rally on January 24. Only together can we obtain the resources we need to raise the employer contribution for health insurance. Please contact your local president and let her or him know that you will attend the rally.  Also, find out how your local association will be involved in the rally. See you there!
